TMA Bucks Scholarship Fund
Each year, TMA Bucks awards scholarships to Bucks
County high school seniors who plan to
pursue a course of post high school study in
civil engineering, urban planning,
transportation management or other
related fields. The scholarships are
presented to the students in front of
TMA members at the annual meeting each
June.

These
scholarships, which have been awarded
since 2009, are one-time awards that are
paid directly to the college or other
accredited secondary school the winning
students will attend.

In 2010, TMA Bucks announced that a
$2,000 Joseph V. DiGirolamo Scholarship
will be awarded annually. This
scholarship recognizes the founder of
TMA Bucks who served 11 years as
president of the board of directors.

Funds for the TMA Bucks Scholarships are
provided through the many area companies
that participate in the organization's
annual golf outing. The TMA Bucks
Scholarship Fund is a registered 501 (c)
3 non-profit organization. Donations to
the fund may be sent in care of TMA
Bucks Scholarship Fund, Seven Neshaminy
Interplex, Suite 103,
Trevose, PA 19053.

According to statistics gathered by TMA
Bucks, seatbelt use by students who
drive to Bucks County high schools
averages around 60 percent. While
alarming on its own, this low rate of
seatbelt use becomes more concerning
when compared with the 90 percent
seatbelt use by all adults in Bucks
County. In order to increase seatbelt
use among students who drive to Bucks
County schools, TMA Bucks and the Bucks
County Office of Highway Safety have
partnered to deliver a strong message to
these students:
Seatbelts Save Lives!

Unannounced baseline surveys of seatbelt
usage by student drivers are conducted
at all public and private high schools
throughout the county in the fall.

Each
school's survey results are then
forwarded to the administration with an
invitation to participate in the
challenge to increase the number of
students wearing seatbelts.

The
student body at each participating
school will view an assembly called
"Survival 101" (PennDOT’s seatbelt
awareness program aimed at middle school
and high school students) that is
arranged by the Bucks County Office of
Highway Safety and conducted by the
Pennsylvania State Police.

A student
group at each high school then works to
actively promote seatbelt use within the
student body using posters, school-wide
announcements, and other messages.

In spring, an unannounced follow-up
survey is conducted at each of the
participating schools. The school with
the highest overall seatbelt use and the
school with the greatest percentage
increase in seatbelt use are both
awarded with perpetual plaques and cash
grants for a safety-related use by the
school. These plaques and grants are
given by TMA Bucks.

Compressed Natural Gas
TMA Bucks is paving the way for
Compressed Natural Gas use to be a
reality in Bucks County by working hard
to implement a public fueling station.
The TMA has also incorporated a CNG bus
into our rushbus job access/reverse
commute fleet. Continuing to be
proactive in promoting the advantages of
integrating CNG vehicles into fleets
throughout the county, the TMA has
worked with municipalities to
participate in demonstrations of CNG
vehicles while also holding educational
seminars on the alternative fuel.

Could your municipal, government, or
school district fleet be a candidate for
our Compressed Natural Gas vehicle pilot
program? Call TMA Bucks at 215-244-9082

Lansdale-Quakertown Corridor
Alternatives Analysis Project
For the past several years, a
partnership of agencies including TMA
Bucks, Bucks County, Montgomery County,
and the Delaware Valley Regional
Planning Commission have been working to
revive commuter rail service along the
Bethlehem Branch rail corridor between
the existing Lansdale Station and upper
Bucks County.
In 2007, following a series of public
meetings where substantial public input
was collected and evaluated, an
Alternatives Analysis report was
released that identifies commuter rail
service as the most cost-effective
option and the most desired by the local
community.
Federal requirements for cost
effectiveness and user benefits are
stringent and ever-changing, resulting
in the need to further evaluate and
refine the results of the 2007
Alternatives Analysis if there is to be
any chance of advancing the project to
subsequent phases of development. This
work began in 2008 and will be complete
in 2011 following outreach to
appropriate officials, stakeholders, and
ultimately the general public.
